Walnut, Purpleheart & Hickory Bookstand
This walnut and purpleheart bookstand was a great learning experience, and also the first piece of large furniture I designed and built from scratch. The walnut is reclaimed from some pieces of old knockdown armoires I found at an old farmstead. The stand shaping and support was done using a router and hand tools. The through tenons were the most challenging and the tenons for the shelf was structurally overkill, but I liked the way it looked. I borrowed from some traditional Chinese furniture design for the shape of the feet. The client requested ball bearing castors and a lazy susan that the stand itself rests on so she could easily pivot the book she was reading. This project took a total of 28 hrs. to complete.
